G.B Crane Vineyard Wines

The G.B. Crane Vineyard is one of Napa Valley’s most historic and revered sites. First planted in the 1860s by Dr. George Belden Crane, this small but remarkable vineyard helped shape the early identity of the valley and the belief that world-class wines could be grown here. More than a century later, the vineyard remains a living piece of Napa’s foundation.

From this singular place we craft two wines: the G.B. Crane Cabernet Sauvignon and George, our red wine blend. Both are born from the same historic ground, each offering its own expression of a vineyard that has stood at the center of Napa Valley’s story since the beginning.

G.B. Crane Vineyard
2021 Cabernet Sauvignon

After declassifying the 2020 vintage, it was yet another reminder that we can’t take each vintage for granted. As such, 2021 is a welcome return of the G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2021 growing season was characterized by slight drought conditions early in the year and average temperatures through the summer. What resulted was an early harvest with high quality fruit and low yields. We harvested the Cabernet Sauvignon in the early morning of September 20th, performed a four-day cold soak and fermented the wine for a total of 22 days on skins. Aged for 21 months in French Oak, 85% new, we bottled on August 10th, 2023.

Tasting Notes
The 2021 G.B. Crane Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon features a dark crimson core with a garnet red rim. Complex would be an understatement as the aromatics evolve in the glass—blackberry, cassis, sage, a hint of plum, cola and savory richness. Broad on entry, the palate exudes volume intensity with ripe boysenberry, blueberry jam and more cassis and cedar box. Smooth oak tannin that explores every millimeter of the palate bows out with elegance and length.

G.B. Crane Vineyard
George 2023 Red Wine

Established in 1860 by Dr. George Belden Crane, the G.B. Crane Vineyard lies just south of St. Helena and remains one of Napa Valley’s oldest producing sites. The head-trained, dry-farmed vines—dominated by Zinfandel and Petite Sirah with smaller amounts of other traditional “mixed black” varieties—are rooted in gravelly alluvial soils that promote natural balance and concentration.

The 2023 growing season was long and temperate, with mild daytime highs and cool evenings preserving acidity and extending hang time. Fruit was hand-harvested in the early morning of October 11th under optimal conditions, yielding clusters of exceptional purity and phenolic maturity. Crafted by Maayan Koschitzky and Philippe Melka, this inaugural vintage under their direction captures the vineyard’s hallmark intensity and structure with remarkable precision and balance.

Our goal remains to honor the site’s 165-year legacy while refining its expression through thoughtful farming and restrained winemaking.

50% Old Vine Zinfandel | 50% Petite Sirah

Tasting Notes
At first reserved, George slowly reveals its layers with the patience of history itself—aromas of cardamom, clove, and mocha intertwined with earthy herbs, dark blackberry, ripe plum, and a lift of violet. The palate is generous yet refined, brimming with black cherry and lush plum framed by classic Zinfandel spice—clove, allspice, and a touch of black pepper. A thread of dry herbs and mineral texture weaves through to a finish of cedar and dust, where supple tannins leave a graceful, lingering impression. Both grounded and expressive, this wine reflects the timeless character of the G.B. Crane Vineyard.
